Geography: maps, regions, and people and places, early United States (grade 8)
Land, rivers, and climate shaped how the early United States made a living and why it pushed west. That growth also forced Native nations off their land and sharpened the fight over slavery.
Colonial regions
💡 Soil and climate decided what kind of work each region of the colonies did.
The Southern colonies had a long growing season and rich soil. Planters grew crops to sell, like tobacco and rice, on large farms called plantations. Much of the work was done by enslaved people.
New England had rocky soil and short summers, so farming was hard. But it had good harbors and forests. Many colonists turned to fishing, building ships, and trading by sea.
🧠 Let's work it out
- Ask what the land offers.
What do you think comes next?
- plantation
- a large farm that grows crops to sell
- cash crop
- a crop grown to sell, not to eat at home
