Geography: maps, regions, and people and places, Eastern Hemisphere (grade 7)

Rivers, deserts, mountains, and seas shaped where the first cities grew in Africa, Asia, and Europe. Geography still shapes how people live and trade there today.

The gift of the Nile

💡 In a dry land, a river's water, soil, and easy travel can decide where almost everyone lives.

Most of Egypt is desert with very little rain. Long ago, the Nile flooded every summer and left rich mud on the fields. Farmers grew wheat and barley in it, so most people lived near the river.

The Nile flows north. Boats floated north with the current. To go south, sailors raised sails, because the wind there usually blows from the north.

Changes can bring costs as well as gains. The Aswan High Dam controls floods and makes power. But it traps the rich mud, so many farmers now use fertilizer.
