Economics: economic systems, trade, and choices, Eastern Hemisphere (grade 7)
Long before modern stores, people in Africa, Asia, and Europe faced the same money questions we do. They traded across deserts and oceans to get what they lacked.
Scarcity and specialization
💡 No place has everything, so people specialize and trade for what they lack.
Scarcity means not having enough of something. Ancient Egypt had lots of grain but few tall trees, so wood was scarce. Egypt traded for it.
Specialization means focusing on one kind of work. In early cities, a potter made pots all day and a farmer grew grain. Each got skilled at one job. By trading, both got more than if each did everything alone.
🧠 Let's work it out
A potter trades pots for grain, and a farmer trades grain for pots.
- Does trade end? No, they need each other.
What do you think comes next?
- scarcity
- not having enough of something
- specialization
- focusing on one kind of work and trading for the rest
