Civics: government, laws, and citizens, Eastern Hemisphere (grade 7)

Many ideas about government, like voting, written laws, and limits on rulers, began in ancient Greece, Rome, China, and England. Today nations also work together in groups.

Athens and Rome

💡 In a direct democracy citizens vote on laws themselves; in a republic they elect people to decide for them.

In ancient Athens, citizens met in an assembly and voted on laws themselves. This is direct democracy.

But only adult male citizens could vote. Women, enslaved people, and foreigners could not. Most people who lived in Athens had no vote, so it was a limited democracy.

The Roman Republic worked differently. Citizens elected officials to make decisions for them. This is a representative democracy. Voters can replace officials in later elections.

🧠 Let's work it out
  1. Ask: who votes on the laws?
What do you think comes next?
