Geography: maps, regions, and people and places (grade 5)
Geography helps explain where early Americans lived and why they moved. Here you will learn the land from east to west, how latitude works, and why rivers and harbors mattered.
The land from east to west
💡 The colonies sat on the east coast, and the land got wilder and wider as you went west.
The thirteen colonies were on the east coast of North America. They sat along the Atlantic Ocean.
Just west of the colonies were the Appalachian Mountains. They made it hard to travel west.
Go farther west and you reach the Mississippi River. Next come the Rocky Mountains. Last is the Pacific Ocean.
🧠 Let's work it out
- Picture a map. Move your finger from right to left.
✏️ What your answer looks like: Each one is farther west.
What do you think comes next?
- coast
- land next to an ocean
