History: sources, change over time, and cause and effect (grade 4)
Colorado has a long history, from the first peoples to statehood. Here you will learn who lived here, what the gold rush changed, and how to read sources from different sides.
First peoples of Colorado
💡 Native peoples lived in Colorado for thousands of years before miners and settlers came.
Ancestral Puebloan people lived in the Southwest long ago. About 800 years ago, they built homes in the cliffs at Mesa Verde.
The Ute people have lived in Colorado's mountains and valleys for a very long time. They hunted deer and elk. On the eastern plains, the Cheyenne and Arapaho followed buffalo herds.
Hispano settlers came north from New Mexico. In 1851, they started San Luis in the San Luis Valley. It is the oldest town in Colorado that still stands today.
