History: sources, change over time, and cause and effect (grade 3)
History is the story of how people lived in the past. Here you will learn how to tell what changed, put events in order, find causes, and pick good sources.
Change and staying the same
💡 To see change, compare the same place at two times and ask what is different and what is the same.
Towns change over time. Dirt roads get paved. Old buildings get new uses. More people move in.
Some things stay the same. A town may still have farms. The word "still" is a clue that something did not change.
Old photos help us see change. People rode horses and drove wagons long before cars were common. So a street photo with wagons is most likely older than one with cars.
🧠 Let's work it out
- Find two times, then and now.
What do you think comes next?
- change
- when something becomes different
- past
- the time before now
