Body structures for survival (grade 4)

Plants and animals have body parts that help them get food, grow, and stay safe. The shape of a part tells you its job.

Plant parts and their jobs

💡 Each part of a plant has a job that helps the plant live and make new plants.

Roots take in water from the soil. They also hold the plant in place.

The stem carries water up from the roots to the leaves. In a tree, the stem is the trunk. Leaves catch sunlight to make food.

Flowers make seeds. Bright colors and sweet smells bring insects, which carry pollen from flower to flower.

Seeds need to spread out. Some seeds have hooks that stick to fur. An animal carries them to a new spot.

🧠 How to think about it

Ask where the part is and what is around it. Roots are in soil, where the water is. So they take in water.
