Weathering, erosion, and Earth's features (grade 4)
Earth's surface is always changing. Water, ice, and wind break rock down and move it. Rock layers and maps help us read Earth's story and plan for hazards.
Weathering
💡 Weathering is rain, ice, wind, and roots breaking rock into smaller pieces that stay in place.
Weathering breaks rock into smaller pieces. Rain, ice, wind, and plant roots can all do it. It is very slow.
Ice is a strong rock breaker. Water fills a crack. When it freezes, the ice takes up more space and pushes the crack wider. After many nights, the rock splits.
In weathering, the pieces stay where they broke. If they get carried away, that is erosion.
🧠 Let's work it out
- Ask two things.
What do you think comes next?
