Physics: waves and electromagnetic radiation (grade 11)
Waves carry energy from place to place. One equation links their speed, frequency, and wavelength, and light has a special double nature.
Speed, frequency, and wavelength
💡 Wave speed = frequency × wavelength (v = fλ).
Frequency is how many waves pass a point each second, in hertz (Hz). Wavelength is the distance from one crest to the next. Amplitude is the height of a wave above its rest position. Period is the time for one wave: period = 1 ÷ frequency.
When a wave enters a new material, its frequency stays the same but its speed changes. Since v = fλ, the wavelength changes in the same direction as the speed.
Sound at 340 m/s and 170 Hz: λ = v ÷ f = 340 ÷ 170 = 2 m. If sound moves into water (1,500 m/s) with the same frequency, the faster speed means a longer wavelength.
