More and fewer

💡 The bigger count has more. The smaller count has fewer.

Count each group. 7 apples and 3 bananas. 7 is more than 3.

So there are more apples. There are fewer bananas.

🧠 How to think about it

Count each group and say the numbers. The number we say later when we count is more.

🏡 Try it at home

Put some forks and some spoons on the table. Which has more? Count both to check.

💡 Two groups are the same when they have the same count.

Match each cup with a plate. If none are left over, they are the same.

You can also count. 6 apples and 6 pears are the same.

🧠 How to think about it

Pair them up, one and one. Is any thing left with no partner? If not, they are the same.

Set the table. Is there a fork for each plate? Match them to find out.

💡 A longer row does not always have more. Count to be sure.

5 balls in a long row can look like a lot. 6 balls in a short pile is more.

Your eyes can trick you. Counting tells the truth.

Do not ask which row is longer. Ask which number is bigger. Count each group first.

Make a long line of 4 coins and a tight pile of 6. Ask which has more. Then count.

💡 When we count, the bigger number comes later.

We count 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10. 9 comes after 7, so 9 is bigger.

To put numbers in order, find the one we say first.

Which is more, 9 or 5? Count up. You say 5 first, then 9 later. So 9 is more.
