Solve systems of two linear equations
A system is two equations at once. Its solution is the one point that makes both true, where the two lines cross.
Substitution
💡 If one equation says what y equals, put that into the other equation in place of y.
If one equation is y = something, you can swap that something in for y in the other equation.
Now there is only one letter. Solve for x. Then put x back in to get y.
🧠 Let's work it out
Solve y = 2x and x + y = 15.
- Swap in 2x for y: x + 2x = 15.
✏️ What your answer looks like: Write the answer as a point (x, y): (5, 10).
What do you think comes next?
- system of equations
- two or more equations that share the same letters
- solution
- the point (x, y) that makes both equations true
- substitute
- put one thing in place of another
