Apply the Pythagorean theorem
The Pythagorean theorem links the three sides of a right triangle. It finds lengths you can't measure directly, like a ladder's reach.
Finding the hypotenuse
💡 In a right triangle, a² + b² = c², where c is the longest side across from the right angle.
A right triangle has one square corner. The two sides that make the corner are the legs, a and b. The longest side is the hypotenuse, c.
The rule is a² + b² = c². Square the legs, add, then take the square root.
If the answer isn't a whole number, round it as the question asks.
🧠 Let's work it out
The legs of a right triangle are 20 and 21. Find the hypotenuse.
- Square and add: 20² + 21² = 400 + 441 = 841.
✏️ What your answer looks like: Type 29.
What do you think comes next?
- right triangle
- a triangle with one 90° corner
- legs
- the two sides that make the right angle
- hypotenuse
- the longest side, across from the right angle
