Solve multistep percent problems
Real money problems often take more than one step: tax on a price, a sale on a sale, or a change from last year. This skill handles all of them.
Tax, tips, markups, and commission
💡 Find the percent of the amount; add it on if the question asks for the total.
Tax, tips, markups, and commission are all a percent of some amount.
First find the percent: change it to a decimal and multiply.
Then read the question. Does it want just that part, or the new total? For a total, add the part to the start amount.
🧠 Let's work it out
A $30 meal has 7% tax. What is the total?
- Tax: 0.07 × 30 = 2.10.
✏️ What your answer looks like: Type it in dollars, like 32.10.
What do you think comes next?
- markup
- an amount added to what a store paid, to set its price
- commission
- pay that is a percent of what someone sells
- sales tax
- a percent added to a price
