Find a percent of a quantity

Percent means "out of 100". Percents show up in sales, scores, and surveys, so finding them fast is a real-life skill.

Finding a percent of a number

💡 To find a percent of a number, write the percent as a decimal and multiply.

A percent is a number out of 100. So 40% means 40 out of 100, or 0.40.

To find 40% of a number, multiply the number by 0.40. You can also find 10% first, then multiply.

A percent over 100 gives more than the whole. 110% of a number is a bit more than the number.

🧠 Let's work it out

Find 40% of 65.

  1. Change the percent to a decimal: 40% = 0.40.
