Place value and powers of 10 (grade 5)
Our number system is built on tens. Here you use powers of 10 to multiply, divide, and round numbers, including decimals.
Powers of 10
💡 The small raised number tells how many 10s to multiply together.
10⁵ means 10 × 10 × 10 × 10 × 10. That is 100,000.
The raised number is the number of zeros after the 1. It does not mean multiply by that number.
A number times a power of 10 works the same way. 4 × 10² is 4 × 100 = 400.
🧠 Let's work it out
Find 10⁵.
- Multiply five 10s.
✏️ What your answer looks like: Type just the number: 100000.
What do you think comes next?
- exponent
- the small raised number that tells how many times to multiply
- power of 10
- 10 multiplied by itself some number of times, like 100 or 1,000
