Order of operations and expressions (grade 5)
When a problem has more than one step, math has rules for which step comes first. Everyone who follows them gets the same answer.
Multiply and divide before you add and subtract
💡 Do times and divide before plus and minus.
In 7 + 2 × 4, do 2 × 4 first. That is 8. Then 7 + 8 = 15.
If you added first, you would get 36. That is not right.
🧠 Let's work it out
Find the value of 9 − 3 × 2.
- Multiply first: 3 × 2 = 6.
✏️ What your answer looks like: Type just the number: 3.
What do you think comes next?
- expression
- numbers and signs that stand for a value, like 3 + 4
- order of operations
- the rules for which step to do first
