Equivalent fractions and comparing fractions (grade 4)

Equal fractions name the same amount with different numbers. Here you make them and use them to compare fractions.

Multiply top and bottom

💡 Multiply the top and bottom by the same number to get an equal fraction.

Times the top and bottom by the same number. The pieces get smaller, but you get more of them. The amount stays the same.

To fill in a missing number, first find what changes one bottom into the other. Then do the same to the top.

If the bottom is the missing number, work from the tops instead. Find what changes one top into the other, then do the same to the bottom.

🧠 Let's work it out

Find the missing top: 2/3 = ?/12.

  1. The bottom went from 3 to 12: 3 × 4 = 12.
