Unit fractions and fractions on a number line (grade 3)

A fraction names part of a whole that is cut into equal parts. You can see fractions as shaded parts or as spots on a number line.

Parts of a whole

💡 The bottom number tells how many equal parts make the whole, and the top number tells how many parts you have.

Cut a whole into equal parts. Count all the parts. That number goes on the bottom.

Count the parts you have, eat, or shade. That number goes on the top.

🧠 Let's work it out

Look at the picture. It has 6 equal parts. 3 are shaded. What fraction is shaded?

  1. Parts in all: 6, so 6 goes on the bottom.
