Add and subtract within 1000 (grade 3)

Here you add and take away numbers up to 1,000. Working one place at a time keeps big numbers easy.

Add place by place

💡 Add ones to ones, tens to tens, and hundreds to hundreds, and carry when a place gets 10 or more.

Line the numbers up so the places match. Start with the ones.

If a place adds up to 10 or more, keep the ones digit. Carry the 1 to the next place to the left.

🧠 Let's work it out

Find 158 + 267.

  1. 8 + 7 = 15. Write 5, carry 1.
