Time to 5 minutes

💡 Each number on the clock is 5 more minutes for the long hand.

Long hand on 3 is 15 minutes. Long hand on 8 is 40 minutes.

The short hand shows the hour it has passed.

🧠 How to think about it

Count by 5s from 12 to the long hand: 5, 10, 15. Then read the hour from the short hand.

🏡 Try it at home

Look at the clock at dinner. Count by 5s to read the minutes together.

💡 a.m. is from midnight to noon. p.m. is from noon to midnight.

Breakfast at 7:00 is 7:00 a.m. School ends at 3:00 p.m.

Noon is 12:00 in the middle of the day.

Ask: is it before lunch or after? Before noon is a.m. After noon is p.m.

💡 A coin's value is not its size.

A penny is 1¢. A nickel is 5¢. A dime is 10¢. A quarter is 25¢.

A dime is smaller than a nickel, but it is worth more.

Don't look at the size. Say each coin's name, then its cents.

Sort coins from a jar into pennies, nickels, dimes, and quarters. Say what each is worth.

💡 Start with the coins worth the most, then count on.

Quarter, dime, dime, penny. Count 25, 35, 45, 46.

Count quarters by 25s, dimes by 10s, nickels by 5s, and pennies by 1s.

Line up the coins from most to least. Then skip-count, changing the jump for each kind.

🏡 Try it at home

Grab a handful of coins. Put them in order from biggest value. Count them together.

💡 Add to find a total and subtract to find change.

2 dimes and 3 nickels is 35¢. Count the value, not the coins.

A pencil costs 45¢. You pay 50¢. You get 5¢ back as change.

$3 and 2 quarters is $3 and 50¢. Keep the dollars and the cents apart.
