Time to the hour

💡 The short hand tells the hour. When the long hand is on 12, it is o'clock.

Short hand on 3, long hand on 12. It is 3 o'clock, or 3:00.

Do not mix up the hands. The short hand is the hour.

🧠 How to think about it

Find the short hand first. Read its number. Then check that the long hand is on 12.

🏡 Try it at home

Look at a clock at home on the hour. Which hand is short? What hour is it?

💡 When the long hand is on 6, it is half past.

At half past 4, the long hand is on 6. The short hand is between 4 and 5.

We write half past 4 as 4:30.

🧠 How to think about it

The short hand is between two numbers. Use the one it has passed. Between 7 and 8 means 7:30.

🏡 Try it at home

Set a timer for bath at half past. Look at the clock together when it rings.

💡 A digital clock shows the hour, then the minutes.

9:30 means 9 hours and 30 minutes. That is half past 9.

2:00 means 2 o'clock.

Read the round clock first. Then say it the digital way: hour, then minutes.

Find a digital clock at home, like on the stove. Read the hour together.
