Earth and space: Earth's systems and the water and carbon cycles (grade 12)
Earth works as connected systems of rock, water, air, and life. Water and carbon cycle among them, and feedback loops can speed up or slow down change.
Earth's four systems
💡 Earth's systems are the geosphere, hydrosphere, atmosphere, and biosphere, and they constantly affect each other.
The geosphere is rock and soil. The hydrosphere is all water. The atmosphere is the air. The biosphere is all living things.
Changes in one system ripple into others. Plants (biosphere) pull carbon from the air (atmosphere). Rain (hydrosphere) wears down rock (geosphere).
🧠 How to think about it
Name the system by what it is made of: rock, water, air, or life. "Bio" means life.
- biosphere
- all living things on Earth
- geosphere
- Earth's rock and soil
