Earth and space: resources, hazards, and sustainability (grade 12)
People depend on Earth's resources and live with its hazards. Good choices weigh the costs, the benefits, and what future generations will need.
Renewable and limited resources
💡 A resource lasts only if it is replaced as fast as it is used.
Wind and sunlight are renewable: nature replaces them constantly. Coal, oil, natural gas, and uranium are not replaced on a human time scale.
Groundwater in an aquifer refills slowly from rain. If pumping is faster than refilling, the water table drops and wells go dry.
🧠 Let's work it out
- Find the net change, then divide.
What do you think comes next?
- renewable
- replaced naturally as fast as it is used
- aquifer
- underground rock or sand that holds water
