Opposites

💡 Opposites are as far apart as words can be.

Hot and cold are opposites. Up and down are opposites.

Warm is not the opposite of hot. It is close to hot.

Think of the word. Now think of the thing that is the most not like it.

Play the opposite game. You say big. Your child says small.

💡 Words can go in groups, like fruits, animals, or clothes.

An apple is a fruit. A carrot is a vegetable.

A dog, a frog, and a bird are all animals.

Ask: how are they the same? Then ask: which one fits that way too?

🏡 Try it at home

Sort things from the fridge. Put fruits in one pile and the rest in another.

💡 The end of a word can change what it means.

Add s or es for more than one: dog, dogs. Fox, foxes.

Add ed when it already happened: I jumped.

Put un at the start to undo: untie.

Look at the end of the word. Is there s, es, or ed? What does it tell you?

Count things in your home out loud: one cup, two cups. One box, two boxes.

💡 Who, what, where, and when each ask about one kind of thing.

Who asks about a person. What asks about a thing.

Where asks about a place. When asks about a time.

Where is the park? The answer is a place. So where asks about places.

🏡 Try it at home

Take turns asking who, what, where, and when questions at dinner.

💡 Some words have more than one meaning.

A duck is a bird. But you can duck, too. That means to bend down low.

A bat can fly. A bat can also hit a ball.
