Words to know by sight

💡 Some words we know just by looking at them.

Words like the, you, is, and to are in all books.

We know them so well, we do not sound them out.

🧠 How to think about it

Look at the letters in order. The is t, h, e. Teh is mixed up.

🏡 Try it at home

Write the, you, and is on cards. Hide them. Read each one when you find it.

💡 Pick the word that makes the sentence make sense.

Read the sentence with each word.

Ask: does it sound right? Does it make sense?

I ___ a dog. I see a dog makes sense. I to a dog does not.

🏡 Try it at home

Say a sentence and stop at one word. Your child fills in the word that fits.

💡 Words go in an order that makes sense.

The first word has a big letter.

The last word has the end mark.

Find the big letter. That word goes first. Find the dot. That word goes last.

🏡 Try it at home

Write We like the cat on four cards. Mix them up. Your child puts them in order.

💡 When you read, think about what is happening.

Read each word. Then think: who is it about? What did they do?

If you are stuck, look back at the words.

What is little? Find the word little. Read the words just before it. The hen is little.

Read a short book together. Ask one question at the end, like who ran?
