Reading stories: key ideas, theme, and evidence (grade 8)
Grade 8 readers choose the strongest evidence, draw careful inferences, and see how lines of dialogue and key moments push characters to act.
The strongest evidence
💡 The strongest evidence states or shows the answer directly, not just something close to it.
Many details in a story connect to a question. The strongest one proves the answer most directly.
When a character explains their own reason, that line is usually the best evidence.
For a two-part question, check each detail on its own. Does this detail, by itself, prove the point?
🧠 Let's work it out
Question: why did Zoe leave the team? Detail A: "Zoe looked tired at practice." Detail B: "'I need time for my job,' Zoe told the coach."
- A is a hint.
What do you think comes next?
- evidence
- words from the text that prove an answer
