Reading stories and poems: word choice, tone, and point of view (grade 8)
Grade 8 readers study how word choice sets tone, how structure shapes meaning, and how differences in what readers and characters know create irony.
Word choice and tone
💡 The details and words an author picks create a tone and show feelings no one states.
Tone is the writer's attitude, like warm, angry, or playful. You hear it in word choice, just as you hear tone in someone's voice.
A small detail can carry feeling. A carefully wrapped lunch shows love. A slammed door shows anger.
Ask what the detail makes you feel, and how it affects the characters' choices.
🧠 Let's work it out
Note: "Text me the second you get there. The roads are icy, and I keep picturing that sharp turn by the bridge."
- Words like "icy" and "keep picturing" show worry.
What do you think comes next?
- tone
- the attitude a writer shows toward a subject
- word choice
- the specific words an author picks
