Grammar, usage, and punctuation (grade 8)
Grade 8 writers use verbals, choose active or passive voice, and match verb mood to their purpose. These choices control how clear and strong a sentence is.
Verbals: gerunds, participles, infinitives
💡 A verbal looks like a verb but does another job: a gerund is a noun, a participle is an adjective, and an infinitive is "to" plus a verb.
A gerund is a verb ending in -ing used as a noun: "Dancing is fun." Dancing is the subject.
A participle is a verb form used as an adjective: "the frozen lake," "a crying baby."
An infinitive is "to" plus a verb: "to run," "to read." It can act as a noun, adjective, or adverb.
"Painting calms me."
- "Painting" is the subject, a thing, so it is a gerund.
✏️ What your answer looks like: If you're asked to type an infinitive, include the word "to."
- gerund
- an -ing verb form used as a noun
