Reading stories: key ideas, theme, and evidence (grade 7)
Grade 7 readers cite evidence, read between the lines, and track how characters change. Together these show how a story builds its theme.
Cite what the text says
💡 Answer from what the text actually says, and point to the words that prove it.
Some answers are stated right in the story. A character says it out loud, or the narrator tells you.
Find the scene, then read it closely. Wrong choices often sound reasonable but are never in the text.
When you choose two details, each one must prove the exact idea in the question.
🧠 Let's work it out
Story: "Dad shook his head. 'We can't buy the bike yet,' he said. 'The car needs new tires first.'" Why can't they buy the bike?
- Not because Dad is mean.
What do you think comes next?
- cite
- to point to the exact words that support your answer
- explicit
- stated directly in the text
