Vocabulary: context clues, word parts, and figurative language (grade 6)

Strong readers figure out new words on their own. Clues in the sentence, word parts, and the feelings words carry all help.

Context clues

💡 The words around an unknown word often tell you what it means.

Context clues are hints in nearby sentences. Look at what happens right before or after the word.

Sometimes the clue is a contrast. If one person is quiet and another acts the opposite way, the new word means the opposite of quiet.

Try each answer in place of the word. The right one makes the whole passage make sense.

🧠 Let's work it out

"After the race, Leo was parched. He drank three glasses of water." What does "parched" mean?

  1. The clue is that he drank a lot of water.
