Vocabulary: context clues, word parts, and figurative language (grade 5)

Strong readers figure out new words on their own. Here you use context clues, Greek and Latin word parts, word relationships like analogies, and figurative language.

Context clues

💡 The sentences around a word give clues to its meaning, including which meaning a word with two meanings has.

A context clue can be an example, a cause, a contrast, or a definition. Often the next sentence explains the new word.

Some words are spelled the same but said in two ways, with two meanings. Lead can be a metal or can mean to guide. The sentence tells you which one.

Try your meaning in place of the word. If the sentence makes sense, you have it.

🧠 Let's work it out

Read: The fox was elusive. Every time the hunters got close, it slipped away.

  1. Ask: what does the second sentence show? The fox was hard to catch.
