Reading stories: key details, lessons, and characters (grade 5)

Readers quote the text to prove what they think. Here you use exact details, follow the plot, compare characters, and find the theme of a story or poem.

Quote details as evidence

💡 Strong answers point to exact words in the text that prove them.

When you answer a question about a text, prove it with details. The best evidence uses the author's exact words.

Some answers are stated directly. Others are inferences you draw from several details.

When you pick evidence, choose the detail that proves the point. A detail that is true but about something else does not help.

🧠 Let's work it out

Question: How do we know the old dog was well loved? Text: His collar was worn smooth from years of pats. The family saved him the softest spot by the fire.

  1. Ask: which details show love? Years of pats and the softest spot.
