Reading stories: key details, lessons, and characters (grade 4)

Strong readers back up what they think with details from the text. Here you use details to explain and infer, sum up what happens, find the theme, and describe characters.

Details and inferences

💡 Use details from the text to answer questions, even when the answer is not said right out.

Some answers are stated right in the text. Find the part that talks about your question and read it again.

Other answers are inferences. An inference is a smart guess you make from clues plus what you already know.

In a play, the stage directions in brackets give clues too. They tell what a character does.

🧠 Let's work it out

Story: Mia's shoes were muddy, and her hair dripped onto the floor. Question: What was the weather like?
