Tricky words

💡 Words like because, enough, though, and should are learned by heart.

These words do not follow the usual rules.

Look closely. Though, through, and thought look a lot alike.

🧠 How to think about it

Read the sentence with each choice. Only one fits both the sound and the meaning.

🏡 Try it at home

Write five tricky words on paper. Use each one in a sentence together.

💡 When a word does not make sense, go back and read it again.

Mom cut the bread with a knit? That can't be right.

Look at every letter. The word is knife.

Ask: does it make sense? Does it look right? If not, read it again.

🏡 Try it at home

Read aloud and make a mistake on purpose. Let your child catch it.

💡 Know why you are reading, then look for the part that answers it.

Why did Jada and Theo sell lemonade? Look near the start.

They wanted to buy a new ball.

Pick a key word from the question. Find it in the story. Read the lines around it.

🏡 Try it at home

Read a recipe together to answer one question, like how long it bakes.
