Vocabulary: context, roots, figures of speech, and nuance (grade 11)
Strong readers figure out words from context and roots, and notice the shades of feeling words carry. This skill also covers figures of speech that bend literal meaning.
Hyperbole and personification
💡 Figures of speech say something that isn't literally true in order to make a point vivid.
Hyperbole is deliberate exaggeration: "This bag weighs a ton." No one means it literally. The point is how heavy it feels.
Personification gives human traits to something that isn't human: "The old stairs groaned under our feet." Stairs can't groan, but the image shows strain.
"My phone has been dying for a century."
- Could this be literally true? No.
