Vocabulary: context, word parts, connotation, and nuance (grade 10)

Precise words make writing sharp. This skill is about working out meanings from context and word parts, sensing a word's feeling, and choosing the exact word a sentence needs.

Context clues

💡 Use the words around an unknown word, like examples, results, and contrasts, to figure out what it must mean.

Context clues are hints in the nearby words. A result clue: "The soup was so scalding that he spat it out." Spitting it out tells you scalding means very hot.

Contrast clues use words like "unlike," "but," or "instead." "Instead of the usual bland soup, the cafe served a fiery stew" sets two opposite tastes side by side.

Many words have more than one meaning. "Run" can mean move fast, or it can mean operate, as in "run the dishwasher." Pick the meaning that fits this sentence, not the most common one.

Then test your guess. Put it in place of the word and reread. If the sentence still makes sense, you're close.

🧠 Let's work it out

"The puppy was so lethargic that it barely lifted its head when we called."

  1. The "so... that" clue links the word to a result.
