Tricky words

💡 Some words break the rules, so we learn them by heart.

Said, was, were, there, and what are tricky words.

Look at all the letters. Were and where look a lot alike.

Read the sentence with each word. The dogs were happy sounds right. The dogs was happy does not.

🏡 Try it at home

Put five tricky words on sticky notes. Read one each time you pass by.

💡 Good readers stop and fix a word that does not make sense.

I ride my bake to the park? That does not make sense.

Look at the word once more. It is bike.

Ask: does it make sense? If not, look at every letter and try again.

Read a sentence with a silly mistake. Your child finds the word to fix.
