Chemistry: atomic structure and periodic trends (grade 10)
Every substance is made of atoms. The number and arrangement of an atom's particles explain the patterns of the periodic table.
Protons, neutrons, and electrons
💡 The number of protons sets which element an atom is.
Protons (positive) and neutrons (no charge) sit in the tiny nucleus. Electrons (negative) move around it. A neutral atom has as many electrons as protons.
The atomic number is the number of protons. Every element has its own. Atoms can gain or lose electrons to become ions and still be the same element.
The mass number is protons plus neutrons. So neutrons = mass number − atomic number.
🧠 Let's work it out
Chlorine has 17 protons and mass number 35.
- Neutrons = 35 − 17 = 18.
