Logarithms (Algebra II)
A logarithm asks what power you need. Logs undo exponents, so they let you solve for an unknown exponent, like how long money takes to double.
A log is an exponent
💡 log_b x asks: b to what power gives x?
log₄ 64 = 3 because 4³ = 64. The answer to a log is always an exponent.
log with no base written means base 10. ln means base e.
Fractions and decimals give negative logs: log₂ (1/8) = −3, because 2^(−3) = 1/8.
🧠 Let's work it out
Find log 0.01.
- No base is written, so the base is 10.
✏️ What your answer looks like: Type just -2.
What do you think comes next?
- logarithm
- the exponent you need to make a number from a base
- natural log
- ln, a logarithm with base e
