Solve systems algebraically and graphically
Solving a system means finding the point that satisfies two equations at once. Substitution and elimination work even when graphing would be messy.
Substitution
💡 When one equation already isolates a variable, substitute that expression into the other equation.
If an equation reads y = … or x = …, replace that variable in the other equation with the expression.
Solve the one-variable equation. Then substitute back to find the other variable.
🧠 Let's work it out
Solve y = 2x + 1 and 3x + y = 16.
- Swap in 2x + 1 for y: 3x + (2x + 1) = 16.
✏️ What your answer looks like: Write the point as (3, 7).
What do you think comes next?
- system
- two equations that must both be true
- substitute
- replace a variable with an equal expression
