Add, subtract, and multiply polynomials
Polynomials are sums of terms like 3x² − 2x + 5. Adding, subtracting, and multiplying them is the toolkit for quadratics and beyond.
Adding and subtracting polynomials
💡 Combine like terms by degree, and when subtracting, change the sign of every term in the second polynomial.
Like terms have the same variable and the same exponent. x² terms combine only with x² terms.
When subtracting a polynomial, distribute the minus sign to every term in it first.
Write the answer from highest power to lowest.
🧠 Let's work it out
Find (4x² + x) − (x² − 3x + 2).
- Flip the signs in the second group: 4x² + x − x² + 3x − 2.
✏️ What your answer looks like: Type it with ^ and no parentheses, like 3x^2 + 4x - 2.
What do you think comes next?
- polynomial
- a sum of terms with whole-number exponents, like x² − 4x + 1
- degree
- the highest exponent in a polynomial
- like terms
- terms with the same variable raised to the same power
