Construct linear and exponential functions

Linear models change by adding the same amount each step; exponential models change by multiplying by the same factor. Telling them apart is key to modeling growth, decay, and money.

Linear or exponential?

💡 Same difference each step means linear; same ratio each step means exponential.

Check the differences between outputs. If they're all the same, the pattern is linear.

If not, check the ratios (divide each output by the one before). If they're all the same, it is exponential.

🧠 Let's work it out

Is 3, 12, 48, 192 linear or exponential?

  1. Check the differences: 9, 36, 144. Not equal.
What do you think comes next?
linear
changing by the same amount each step
exponential
changing by the same factor (multiplier) each step
