Solve linear equations and inequalities in one variable

Algebra I pulls together every equation tool: distributing, collecting terms, clearing fractions, and handling inequalities. These are the moves behind every later topic.

Distribute, collect, solve

💡 Simplify each side, gather the x terms on one side and the numbers on the other, then divide.

First clear parentheses and combine like terms on each side.

Then move the x terms to one side and the constants to the other. Divide by the coefficient of x.

Check by substituting your answer into the original equation.

🧠 Let's work it out

Solve 3(x − 2) + 5 = x + 9.

  1. Distribute: 3x − 6 + 5 = x + 9.
