Factor quadratics to reveal zeros
Factoring a quadratic rewrites it as a product. The factors show the zeros, the x-values where the graph crosses the x-axis.
Factoring x² + bx + c
💡 Find two numbers that multiply to c and add to b; they go in the two factors.
For x² + bx + c, look for two numbers that multiply to c and add to b.
If c is positive, both numbers have the same sign as b. If c is negative, the numbers have opposite signs.
Check by multiplying the factors back out.
🧠 Let's work it out
Factor x² + x − 20.
- Find two numbers that multiply to −20 and add to 1: try 5 and −4.
✏️ What your answer looks like: Type it as a product, like (x+5)(x-4).
What do you think comes next?
- quadratic
- a polynomial whose highest power is 2, like x² + x − 20
- factored form
- an expression written as a product of factors
